5 out of 5 stars Bear protection...   May 3, 2007

My job often takes me into the mountains involving timber sales, where Bear spray is a must (also for camping/hiking in Bear country). I have never had to use my spray but I have had several "close encounters" in which noise was sufficient to get the (black) bears to move off. I hope I never have to use the spray defensively. I chose the Guard Alaska Bearspray after reading the product description that it is the only one registered with the EPA as effective for 'all species' of bears. We also have Grizzlies in our neck of the woods (although, I have never seen one in the wild).

Noise is the first great option in bear avoidance. Let them know you are approaching with bear bells and talking. I repeat, "Hey, Bear" every ten or fifteen seconds while moving through the forest. I also intentionally snap off dead branches from fallen snags in my path followed by a "Hey, bear". The 'snap' usually resounds loudly through the forest so the bear knows at a distance that something is in the area and the voice will tell it that it's not a forest critter. Having a canister of bear spray is a very good (and necessary) back-up option.

Other reviewers might joke about use on bears, but let's face it - must purchases of the jumbo size bear mace is for protection from members of our own species. And if that is your goal, this is what you want. Don't mess with those little purse-size binaca spray bottles, bear mace is what you need to keep in your car or home. Buy two cans, one for practice and one to keep. It can be a little tricky to see how the safety comes off, and how the trigger works.

I purchased this item as a gift (as well as a piece of mind for me) when my son moved to CA. He does a lot of trail ridding on his bike, and after I read about the mountain lion attacks out there I decided to also purchase the nylon holster for it. I sent them all to him along with a few nylon "zip ties" that he used to affix the holster to his bicycle frame.
Thank God he never has had to use it. Its just good protection for a fair price. The spray can holds a good amount of spray; the holster is constructed very sturdy.

5 out of 5 stars What happens when you buy another brand pepper spray...   June 20, 2010

Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, the B C Fish and
Wildlife Branch is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen, and any persons
that use the out of doors in a recreational or work related function to
take extra precautions while in the field.

We advise the outdoors man to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as
to give advance warning to any bears that might be close by so you don't
take them by surprise.

We also advise anyone using the out of doors to carry "Pepper Spray"
with him in case of an encounter with a bear.

Outdoors men should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and
be able to tell the difference between black bear feces and grizzly bear
feces. Black bear feces is smaller and contains lots of berries and
squirrel fur. Grizzly Bear feces has bells in it and smells like pepper.

Actually have not used the product. In fact, I wonder if there is anyone that has aroused a bears interest, used this product and still has all their fingers and toes? I'm glad I have it just in case. seems easy enough to operate, but like a fire extinguisher, you really should use one once to make sure you know what your doing.
